Some clients think it’s all done and dusted when they land a job only to find out that they didn’t do their homework before entering a new culture, a new organization, and new set of challenges, and sometimes the magic fades all too quickly. Depending on the size of the role, in-coming managers may want to invest the time in developing a more or less formal instrument such as a 100-Day Plan that can be used as a semi-public roadmap, to share with new colleagues while building rapport and obtaining their explicit buy-in for the new manager’s plans.
Companies also often exhibit complex social patterns with cliques of “tribes” such as sales or marketing or finance and controlling developing differing attitudes and expectations. Mapping the workplace in advance is a transferable skill that many only appreciate after they’ve made a mistake (or two).
We have helped hundreds of clients prepare for the challenges of a new workplace and not leave their continuing success to chance.
Beyond that, depending on where you are in your career trajectory, we often advise clients to think longer term, perhaps building on their Personal Strategic Plan, and consider not the next job, but the one thereafter. When you are crossing a river or stream, for example, you cannot simply choose the next rock that will support your weight. You need to consider the one after that and the one after that… This is what we call “career pathing,” a long term navigational plan to achieve your ultimate dream. Working with The Barrett Group greatly increases the probability that you will actually get there.
